The Issue

PROPOSAL SUMMARIZED:

  1. Increasing commercial rent for expensive chains to help lower commercial rent for small businesses
  2. Proposed tax on big chains will put more money towards public works and encouraging growth of local businesses.
  3. Incentivized tax cuts to prospective small business owners in first few years of opening business and offered for qualifying longer-running establishments

THE "WHY?":

Growing up in New York City, I fondly remember frequenting several local restaurants in my neighborhood. These small, family-owned businesses were the heartbeat of our communities, enriching our neighborhoods with diversity, passion, and personal touch. Today, tragically, most of them have vanished. Expensive business chains and high-scale coffee shops have replaced much of Manhattan and Brooklyn’s distinct small enterprises. The fabric of our unique urban tapestry frays as larger corporations displace smaller business owners, struggling under the burden of exorbitant commercial rent and increasing costs.

Numerous small business owners in NYC are subjected to skyrocketing rent costs that eventually drive them out, eroding the cultural and communal richness that makes our city exceptional. Simultaneously, enormous profit-generating chains move in, replacing our local gems with faceless uniformity and siphoning profits far from the communities they are located in.

To combat this encroachment, I propose that New York City introduce a tiered tax system on large commercial chains, where the additional revenues generated will be specifically allocated towards reducing commercial rent for local businesses. Such a policy would create a healthier balance in the business ecosystem, giving local entrepreneurs a fair fighting chance.

The reality is stark: small businesses are not only economic engines, providing employment and contributing to the local economy, but they are also integral in maintaining the identity, vibrancy, and uniqueness of New York's neighborhoods. Public works funded through the proposed tax can support initiatives such as business development grants and subsidies for startups, fostering a nurturing environment where both new and existing local businesses can flourish.

By incentivizing the growth of local businesses and checking the expansive reach of corporate behemoths, we can ensure the preservation of the diverse tapestry that forms New York City’s distinct identity—an identity which is crucial for tourism, resident satisfaction, and the broader economic stability of our city.

I urge you, fellow New Yorkers and supporters of vibrant, diverse community life, to sign this petition. Let's encourage our city council to endorse rent fairness and to adopt these policies that safeguard not only our economy but also preserve the spirit and soul of New York City. Your signature can make a significant difference—transform this vision into reality and protect the local businesses that mean so much to us all.
