Implement Exotic (Rabbit) Animal Care Education in Universities

Implement Exotic (Rabbit) Animal Care Education in Universities

The Issue

My rabbit had a sudden seizure. She was perfectly fine the day prior. We frantically started calling vets near us and there were 6 vet offices within 5 mins in each direction. None of them accepted rabbits. Each no was a gut punch as our poor rabbit was rapidly deteriorating in health. We finally found a vet but we had to drive an hour away (this is Los Angeles, btw) to take her. She screamed multiple times from pain and suddenly passed away on the way to the vet. If there had been a vet accepting rabbits nearby, we could have gotten her the care she needed in time. No innocent rabbit should die in pain due to lack of proper rabbit vets. Their life is worth just as much as any life for a dog or a cat.

This heartbreaking story is not unique. Many exotic pet owners face similar challenges due to a lack of specialized veterinary care for their beloved pets. Rabbits, despite being one of the most popular pets worldwide, are often categorized as 'exotic' animals by many veterinary practices, leading to limited access to appropriate healthcare.

Accordingly, this petition calls for universities across our nation to implement more education programs focused on exotic animal care, such as for rabbits. The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) states that only 6% of veterinarians in private practice treat exotic companion mammals (AVMA, 2019). This statistic highlights an urgent need for increased specialization within our veterinary schools.

By expanding curriculum offerings related specifically towards exotic animal care, future veterinarians will be better equipped with knowledge and skills necessary for treating these animals effectively and compassionately. This change will not only benefit our furry friends but also provide peace of mind for millions of pet owners who currently struggle with finding suitable healthcare options.

Please sign this petition urging universities nationwide to incorporate more comprehensive education on exotic animal care into their veterinary programs; because every pet deserves access to quality healthcare close at hand.
