Implement excused absence policy for student donors at Mizzou

The Issue

Every year, thousands of lives can be saved through organ, stem cell, and marrow donations. Here at the University of Missouri, our chapter has proudly added over 2,500 students to the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP) registry within the last two years. Despite this achievement, our university lacks an excused absence policy for students who commit to this lifesaving mission. An unapproved absence requirement discourages students who genuinely wish to make a difference from registering as potential donors due to fears of affecting their academic standing.

The current faculty handbook states that "Divisional or departmental faculty, the course director, or the instructor may establish attendance standards and will determine valid and invalid reasons for absences..." This broad scope does not guarantee that students can be excused for donation-related procedures, which are unpredictable and urgent.

I urge the University of Missouri to adopt a clear policy that acknowledges verified stem cell or marrow donation appointments and procedures as valid reasons for excused absences. This change would not only support our students but also affirm our commitment to community service and saving lives.

Join me in advocating for this vital policy amendment by signing this petition. Together, we can make a transformative impact at Mizzou and beyond. Let's show our students and community that their altruism is valued and protected.
