The Issue

As a concerned parent and resident, I have been witnessing an alarming number of incidents occurring near the bus stops along Sundance Parkway and other similar locations. Our children and the general public are unnecessarily exposed to risks that can and should be mitigated. It is high time that our municipalities prioritize the safety of their residents, particularly children who use these services daily.

We propose two immediate courses of action: Firstly, implement safety precautions specifically at the bus stops, such as the provision of more safety-oriented facilities, cameras, and appropriate lighting. Secondly, we suggest adjusting the timing of the bus stop pick-ups to periods where there are more adults, police personnel, or other responsible parties around. Furthermore, it's imperative that we integrate in-school security enforcement to provide an extra level of safety.

According to a survey conducted by the National Center for Safe Routes to School, approximately 35% of parents fear for their child's safety due to traffic-related issues near the schools and bus stops. And the concern of students exposed to dangerous weapons is growing, alongside rising abductions and missing persons. Based on these concerns, it is evident that safety measures are urgently recommended to ensure an environment free from threat and harm in these vulnerable areas/children (National Center for Safe Routes to School Survey, 2017).

The added assurance of safety will not only assuage the anxiety of parents but create a safer environment for every citizen. We cannot wait for another incident to occur before we take action. We are calling upon our local government, schools, and public transportation authorities to heed this call and take immediate, adequate, and sustainable action. Please, sign this petition to help our local community create and maintain a safe environment for our children and everyone who frequents the bus stops.
