Implement Enforcement of Laws Against Violent Hate Speech
The Issue
I am a city-slicker turned country-dweller, and over the years, I have experienced a tangible rise in stigma surrounding not just me, but all those with urban stereotypes. It appears that this phenomenon is driven by the clear lack of regulation of hate speech across platforms such as radio, press, and films, where aggressive and derogatory terminologies are casually interwoven with popular culture. The disproportionate influence of internet trolls exacerbates this issue, exposing young minds to polluted perspectives driven by hate speech.
Through various channels and mediums, children, including me in my youth, have witnessed our idols, especially in the hip-hop industry, propagate violent expressions of racial slurs and sexist terms. This exposure begins innocuously, almost unknowingly, but soon culminates in a toxic normalcy around violent and prejudiced notions.
The impact has been far-reaching and damaging, and what's more alarming is the lackadaisical approach of authorities, who cite the overwhelming volume of such instances as an excuse for inaction.
It is imperative that the laws against violent hate speech be stringently enforced to stem this growing menace. The absence of consequence not only emboldens the violators of these laws, but it also creates an unsafe space for impressionable minds that learn to adopt, proliferate and eventually normalize abusive and hateful expression.
A society where hate speech flourishes unchecked is a society alienated and divided. We must rise and lobby for the robust enforcement of hate speech laws to safeguard our communities and build an empathetic and inclusive society for all.
