No one should ever experience the gut-wrenching fear and helplessness of not knowing where their child is. I want to share with you the emotional turmoil felt after hearing the tragic news about three-year-old Noah, a child who could have been saved if only certain resources were available to us. With sadness and urgency, I reflect upon this heart-breaking incident that underscores the need for immediate action.

Every year, thousands of children go missing. In 2022 alone, the National Crime Agency reported over 73,000 missing children cases in the UK. What often makes these situations even more heartbreaking is the gap in time between when a child is reported missing and when the general public is alerted. This delay can result in missing crucial opportunities to safely recover the child.

An effective system already exists in many places that can be our guiding light: the AMBER Alert system in the United States. When a child goes missing there, alerts are immediately issued to the public via their mobile phones, newscasts, and other media outlets. It’s a rapid response that helps law enforcement coordinate with citizens, multiplying the number of eyes looking for the missing child.

In the UK, we need a similar, robust system in place across all regions to ensure that every missing child has the chance to be found quickly and returned safely. We propose implementing a nationwide emergency phone alert system dedicated to missing children.

This system would promptly notify individuals within a designated radius where the child was last seen, providing critical information such as description, possible companions, vehicle details, and any other vital data that could aid in quickly locating them. Everyone in possession of a mobile phone would become part of an extended safety net for missing children.

The technology exists, and similar systems have shown remarkable results in other countries. By implementing this in the UK, we can decrease the time children are missing, achieve higher recovery rates, and ensure the safety and well-being of the most vulnerable amongst us.

Families, communities, and law enforcement working together in a coordinated, informed manner can make all the difference. We cannot leave a child's fate to chance when we have the power to intervene effectively.
