Implement effective traffic calming on Earsdon Road
The Issue
Every morning, I send my son off to school, hoping he crosses the dual carriageway on Earsdon Road safely. This stretch of road has become a dangerous crossing point for children, families, and pedestrians due to the reckless behavior of some motorists. Drivers frequently jump the red lights and make illegal U-turns, ignoring the safety of those who rely on this crossing daily. It is a nerve-wracking experience for a parent, like myself, knowing that my child's safety is at risk each day as he makes his way to school.
The community in and around Whitley Bay deserves safer roads for our children and vulnerable pedestrians. Earsdon Road is a vital route, connecting various parts of the suburb, but it should not be a constant hazard due to insufficient traffic calming measures. Without action, we are left at the mercy of reckless drivers who put lives at risk each time they decide to break the traffic rules.
Statistics indicate that pedestrian safety is compromised when traffic regulations, such as red-light adherence, are not enforced. According to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, compliance with traffic signals is critical to reducing pedestrian accidents. We need a proactive approach to enforce existing laws and introduce new traffic calming measures.
Concrete solutions must be implemented to address these safety concerns. Improved signage, increased signal visibility, reinforced penalties for violations, and the introduction of speed bumps or raised crossings can significantly enhance safety. These measures have proven effective in other regions and could make a substantial difference for Earsdon Road.
Additionally, a partnership with local law enforcement to monitor traffic and enforce laws can deter offenders. More community awareness campaigns about the importance of observing traffic rules could also contribute to the safety of everyone.
Let’s take collective action to protect our children and fellow residents. By signing this petition, you can urge the local council to prioritize these changes and commit to making our streets safer for all. Your support can bring about much-needed change and ensure that children like my son can get to school without fear of harm.
