Implement Distance Restrictions on Liquor License Issuance in Ankeny

Implement Distance Restrictions on Liquor License Issuance in Ankeny
The Issue
My dream of being a self-sustaining entrepreneur with a thriving liquor business in the lovely city of Ankeny has become overshadowed with anxiety about the future. A year ago, I invested my time, energy, and savings to open a liquor store, excited about the new venture and how I could serve my community. However, the city has been issuing unlimited liquor licenses with no concern for the businesses' proximity. This has led to the opening of more liquor stores in close proximity to my establishment.
This unrestricted granting of licenses is not only threatening my business, with an impending fear of shutting my doors, but is also generating an unhealthy business environment in our city. If there had been any policy regarding distance and proximity —for instance, the presence of a 2-mile restriction between any two liquor outlets— I would have proceeded differently with my investment.
This issue goes beyond personal. Millions of small businesses nationwide provide gainful employment and contribute significantly to the country's GDP (Data from the Small Business Administration). By placing such businesses in jeopardy, we endanger the livelihoods of people and negatively impact our economy. The policy of unrestricted granting of liquor licenses seems short-sighted, and instead of promoting success, sets businesses up for failure.
It's time to review and revise this policy. We need to implement strict regulations concerning the distance between businesses while issuing liquor licenses in Ankeny—in line with many other cities across the US that has stringent proximity laws. This will not only help to maintain diversity in business but also ensure a balanced commercial environment in our beloved city.
Please, join hands and sign this petition for a balanced and prosperous Ankeny—where dreams of entrepreneurship can thrive without fear.
