Implement Disaster Pay for Right At School Employees Impacted by the LA Fires

Implement Disaster Pay for Right At School Employees Impacted by the LA Fires
The Issue
Right At School is dedicated to providing safe, engaging, and meaningful in-school and extracurricular programs to enrich students' lives, offer parents peace of mind, and enable schools to focus on their academic mission. While you may recognize us as the educators who care for your children after school, our role is far more integral to their overall development. The devastating LA fires have severely affected our community, leaving many of our dedicated staff members with nothing. We have educators who have tragically lost their homes, vehicles, and even loved ones. As we navigate this challenging time, we remain committed to supporting our students, their families, and our affected staff members.
As educators of the Arcadia School District the fires disrupted our lives, our livelihoods. Thousands like us could not work due to the calamity, which ironically occurred when we needed our income most. Unfortunately, current employment laws do not mandate disaster pay in the event of a natural disaster (U.S. Department of Labor). An unacceptable oversight in a country prone to annual wildfires, hurricanes, and other natural disasters that impede people's ability to generate income.
We need to see change in our industry, and in industries across the country, the kind of change that secures unemployment rights for workers impacted by natural disasters. We need Disaster Pay, a life-line for employees affected by circumstances beyond their control, such as the LA fires.
Help us demand this fair and needed reform. By signing this petition, you stand with us—the victims of the LA fires—and all future people who may find themselves in a position of devastation and income loss due to a disaster. Your signature helps us assert our right to stability and dignity amidst crisis. Please, sign and share this petition.
