The Issue

As a resident of Country Club Apartments in Eatontown, I'm raising this issue not only as a general citizen, but as a mother of a student in the community and a personal witness to the devastating consequences of insufficient traffic safety measures in our community. My husband helped a small child after she was struck by a vehicle while attempting to get to the bus stop. This child bled from her ear while being held steady by another concerned parent. This disheartening incident could have been prevented with a crosswalk and flashing lights.

There is an urgent need to install a crosswalk and flashing light system, especially considering that the child safety data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration shows pedestrian fatalities among children aged 5-9 has increased by 13% over the past five years (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 2020). Nationwide, children from low-income neighborhoods are the majority of those affected - this is a public safety issue and a social justice issue.

With the installation of a crosswalk and flashing lights at bus stops, we can assure a safe passage for all children, prevent future accidents on Tinton Avenue and Country Club Road.

Let's work together to provide children in our community with a safer route to reach their school bus. This is not a luxury, but an essential safety measure. Sign this petition to join us in urging the local council for immediate action.

Thank you for reaching out. As you already know, I am a very strong advocate for children and families and have dedicated my career to this cause. Although I support the safety of all children, I am not a board member in the school district your petition is referring to. I did however research who your concerns would best be addressed by. Please feel free to address the bus stop safety concerns to your principals and/or the Borough's Traffic Safety Bureau at cbartlett@eatontownnj.com or 732-389-7830. All the best to you! Disclaimer: I am speaking on my own behalf and these comments are solely my opinions, and do not represent the Ocean Township BOE. Thank you!
