Implement Comprehensive Training for Handling Special Needs Individuals in Crisis

The Issue

As a mother of a child with autism, I felt devastated and helpless when I witnessed the recent unfortunate shooting incident involving a special needs person. It agonizingly highlighted the urgent need for better education and training for handling situations involving individuals with autism and other special needs. Many are unaware of the specific challenges that persons with special needs face. Especially in crisis situations, the ignorance and unfamiliarity with such conditions can, and has, led to dire consequences.

In the US alone, approximately one in 54 children is diagnosed with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). These children grow up to be adults who may face interactions with authorities who lack understanding and adequate training for these situations. Such training for first responders is not universally standardized or mandated (Autism Society, 2020).

Our request is for our law enforcement agencies to develop, implement, and mandate comprehensive training to deal with special needs individuals in crisis situations, specifically focusing on Autism Spectrum Disorder and other related conditions. We implore the relevant entities to strengthen their procedures, thereby ensuring safety and understanding for all parties involved.

This is not just my plea as a concerned mother, but a call from all parents, families, and caregivers who worry for their loved one's safety and interactions with the public. Let’s safeguard their future and ensure them the security they deserve. Please, sign this petition and help us advocate for a better, safer, more understanding environment for individuals with special needs.
