Safety is a basic right. Yet, in Weatherford, fear has become a constant companion for children- at school, on the playground, and in the streets. This worry arises from the apparent lack of safety measures across the city, which has negatively impacted our community's peace of mind and overall well-being.

This issue is deeply personal. People, young and old, are confronted or pressured in public spaces regularly. Our children deserve to grow, play, and learn in safety, but the present circumstances are creating an environment of constant anxiety and distress.

The National Survey on Children’s Exposure to Violence points out that more than 60% of children surveyed were exposed to violence within the past year either directly or indirectly (Finkelhor et al., 2009). Moreover, the U.S. Department of Justice states that students who don't feel safe at school perform worse academically and are more at risk for anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem.

The impetus for change is clear: we need to prioritize the safety of our community, especially our children. It is time Weatherford officials regulate safety measures across all areas, inside schools and out. This petition is a plead for a thorough review and imposition of safety regulations in Weatherford, enabling every child, every person to live without the burden of fear.
