The Issue

In recent times, community trust in law enforcement has considerably waned. To rebuild this trust, transparency is an essential component. One way to achieve transparency is through the use of body cameras by police. Yet, despite studies showing that body cameras can reduce police use of force incidents by nearly 60% and complaints against officers by 90% (Cambridge University), Wisconsin police departments have not universally adopted their use or the transparent sharing of their footage. We are petitioning for a mandate that all police departments in Wisconsin use body cameras. Additionally, we ask that clear policies be established for the release of this footage to the public, respecting both the privacy rights of individuals and the community’s right to transparency. This policy change would be a significant step towards restoring community trust and ensuring accountability within Wisconsin police departments. Please sign this petition to demonstrate your support for body camera transparency in Wisconsin law enforcement.
