The Issue

Badminton, a sport that is played by over 220 million people globally and included in the Summer Olympics since 1992, deserves recognition and support within the American collegiate sports system. Currently, students passionate about badminton lack opportunities to compete at a collegiate level recognized by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) which oversees college sports in the United States. This absence not only discredits the immense popularity and competitive nature of badminton but also hinders the growth and potential development of athletes across the nation.

Recognized for requiring agility, precision, and strategic gameplay, badminton is much more than a casual backyard sport. It is deeply rooted in traditions worldwide and continues to gain traction in American schools and communities. There are thousands of high school students who compete at high levels with limited avenues to showcase their talent post high school. The NCAA accepting badminton as an official collegiate sport would open doors for scholarships, greater visibility, and a clearer path to professional careers for student-athletes dedicated to the sport.

Establishing badminton as an NCAA sport would not require exorbitant resources. Existing gymnasiums, which host sports like basketball and volleyball, can also accommodate badminton. Equipment costs remain relatively low, and tournaments can easily be integrated into the current structure of collegiate competitions. The inclusion of badminton can enrich campus life, promote cultural diversity, and encourage a healthy, active lifestyle among students.

The NCAA has the power to transform the future of many budding athletes by incorporating badminton into its roster of sports. Let's call upon educational institutions, students, parents, and sports enthusiasts to stand united for this cause. Signing this petition could be the first step in creating new opportunities and funding possibilities, leading to greater inclusivity in collegiate sports. Encourage the NCAA to recognize the enthusiasm and demand for badminton by adding it as an official sport.
