A dear friend's parents friend was involved in a severe car accident due to another driver's distraction by their phone. This incident is not isolated. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, distracted driving claimed 3,142 lives in 2019 alone (NHTSA). We believe that technology can help prevent these tragedies. We propose that all smartphones should automatically lock when they detect movement at driving speeds, thus reducing distractions and increasing road safety. It's time for tech companies to take responsibility for their role in promoting safe driving habits.
