I am writing this petition out of deep concern for the safety of my children and the students at Valrico Lake Advantage Academy and Bell Creek Academy. My daughter is currently in 3rd grade, and my son has just started kindergarten, and every day their walk to school is filled with tension due to the erratic and often dangerous traffic on Boyette Road and Bell Shoals Road. Despite the clear flashing school-zone signs that mandate a speed of 20 mph, many drivers blatantly ignore them, creating a perilous environment for all the children and families in the area.

The importance of a strict speed limit in school zones is not just a precaution, but a necessity to ensure the safety of our students. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, a child is more likely to survive being struck by a vehicle traveling at 20 mph compared to one moving at 35 mph, with more than a five-fold increase in survival rates. Yet, the lack of adherence to these limits poses a significant threat every morning and afternoon during school runs.

Boyette Road and Bell Shoals Road are bustling during school hours, with cars rushing despite the flashing signs. It’s a tragedy waiting to happen, and we must act before it's too late. Automated speed enforcement is a proven solution, effectively curbing violations and reducing accidents. Cities that have implemented these systems have seen up to a 40% reduction in traffic-related incidents in school zones, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

We propose the installation of automated speed cameras in the school zones surrounding Valrico Lake Advantage Academy and Bell Creek Academy. These cameras would record speed violations, issuing fines to offending drivers, thereby deterring speeding and potentially saving a child's life. Similar systems have not only improved compliance rates but also generated funds used for further community and road safety education.

Our children's safety should not be compromised by the impatience of drivers. We implore the local authorities and school administration in Hillsborough County to take swift action. Let's install automated speed enforcement measures to safeguard our children and grant peace of mind to their families.
