The Issue

To the New Jersey State Legislature and Governor:

We demand the reinstatement of red-light cameras and the introduction of automated speed-enforcement cameras in New Jersey to stop reckless driving and prevent avoidable traffic deaths. [1, 2, 3]

The Problem:  A Crisis of Reckless Driving and Zero Accountability

New Jersey roads have become increasingly dangerous for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians alike. Every single day, innocent lives are shattered or lost because of a complete lack of driver accountability.

Blatant Disregard: Drivers routinely fly through red lights, ignore stop signs, and treat neighborhood roads like highways.

Residential Speeding: Streets clearly marked for 25 mph regularly see vehicles traveling at 40, 50, or even over 60 mph.

Enforcement Gaps: Traditional police traffic enforcement is stretched too thin to monitor every critical intersection and residential zone.

Innocent Victims: While reckless drivers usually walk away from crashes unscathed to continue their lives, their victims face catastrophic injuries, permanent disability, or death.

Traffic laws are meaningless without consistent enforcement. Right now, drivers know they can behave recklessly without facing consequences—until a tragedy occurs.

Addressing the Critics: Debunking the Myths

Opponents of automated traffic enforcement often repeat the same outdated arguments on neighborhood forums. Here is the reality:

Myth 1: "Cameras cause accidents."

The Reality: The brief 2014 pilot ban in New Jersey was largely due to poorly timed yellow lights and administrative mismanagement, not the technology itself. Keyboards do not make typos; typists do. Cameras do not cause crashes; drivers who are speeding, distracted, or tailgating cause crashes.

Myth 2: "It’s just a cash grab or a new tax."

The Reality: A traffic ticket is entirely optional. If you follow the speed limit and stop at red lights, you will never pay a dime. Furthermore, revenue from these programs can be legally locked to fund local road safety improvements, sidewalks, and crosswalks.

Myth 3: "It violates my privacy and liberty."
The Reality: Driving is a licensed privilege, not an absolute right. No one has the "liberty" to endanger the public. These cameras only photograph the license plate of vehicles actively breaking the law in plain public view.

Our Solution: Predictable, Fair, and Lifesaving Technology

We are not advocating for hidden traps. We demand a transparent system built on safety, not surprises:

Advance Warning: Large, clear signage must alert drivers well ahead of every camera zone.

Behavior Modification: The goal is not to hand out tickets, but to force drivers to tap their brakes, pay attention, and slow down.

Proven Success: Decades of data from neighboring states show that automated enforcement significantly reduces severe T-bone collisions and slows down traffic in school and residential zones.

Our Call to Action

We, the undersigned residents of New Jersey, urge our elected officials to pass legislation authorizing municipalities to deploy automated speed and red-light enforcement cameras.

Enough is enough. Human lives must take priority over the convenience of reckless drivers. Sign this petition to bring accountability back to New Jersey roads.
