Implement Assyrian Language Classes in Stanislaus County High Schools
The Issue
Those growing up as Assyrians in the diaspora, have felt a profound connection to their roots through language. The Assyrian language is more than words; it is a vibrant tapestry that intertwines our identity, culture, and history. Every expression and phrase, builds a bridge to our ancestors, ensuring that we do not forget where we come from. The Assyrian language is endangered so it is imperative that we take immediate action steps for its preservation.
Stanislaus County is home to one of the largest concentrations of Assyrians in the world. Despite this rich cultural diversity, our high schools do not offer Assyrian language classes. It leaves our students without a formal avenue to learn and engage with the Assyrian culture. With over 50,000 Assyrian-Americans residing in the county, the absence of dedicated language classes is a glaring omission that threatens the continuity of our traditions and values.
Studies have shown that learning a native language increases academic success, strengthens family bonds, and enhances cultural awareness. Language is a cornerstone of identity, offering a sense of belonging and pride. By introducing Assyrian language classes, schools can celebrate and embrace the multicultural fabric of the county, fostering a more inclusive and enriched educational environment.
We call upon the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing, Stanislaus County Office of Education, school districts, local government officials, and the greater community to take immediate action in implementing Assyrian language classes in our high schools. This will not only preserve a vital part of our students' heritage but also enrich our educational landscape as a whole.
Let us unite and voice our needs! By signing this petition, you are advocating for Assyrian language classes to be offered in Stanislaus County high schools. Help ensure that the beauty and richness of the Assyrian language is passed down to future generations.
