Implement Annual Mandatory Mental Health Evaluations to Prevent Suicide

Implement Annual Mandatory Mental Health Evaluations to Prevent Suicide
The Issue
Today, we remember Alex G, a bright 16-year-old who tragically took his own life. This devastating event has left an indelible mark on us and serves as a stark reminder of the increasing prevalence of mental health issues in our society.
-An estimated 703 000 people die by suicide worldwide each year.
-Over one in every 100 deaths (1.3%) in 2019 was the result of suicide.
-The global suicide rate is over twice as high among men than women.
-Over half (58%) of all deaths by suicide occur before the age of 50 years old.
Mental illness is on the rise, with suicide rates having increased by 33% from 1999 through 2017 according to the American Psychological Association (APA). Yet, too often these conditions remain undiagnosed until it's too late. We believe that mandatory annual mental health evaluations can help identify those at risk and provide them with necessary support before they reach a crisis point.
We, the undersigned, call for the implementation of annual mental health evaluations for individuals in critical roles, including but not limited to police officers, teachers, judges, pilots, train conductors, and others entrusted with our safety.
We are calling for legislation that would require ALL individuals to undergo an annual mental health evaluation conducted by qualified professionals. This proactive approach could potentially save countless lives by ensuring early detection and intervention for those struggling with their mental health.
In memory of Alex Gutierrez and in recognition of all those silently suffering from mental illness, we urge you to take action now. Sign this petition to demand mandatory yearly mental health checks - because early detection can mean the difference between life and death.
