Kieran Toon started this petition to West Midlands Police (Simon Foster, Police and Crimson Commissioner for West Midlands) and

Parts of Moseley, Birmingham regularly have cars that are driven in excess of 60mph on 20mph roads.

On the morning of Saturday 7th May, an Audi S3 crashed into two cars 30 metres after leaving a mini roundabout at the bottom of Reddings road.  It accelerated to such a speed in that short distance that it shunted a parked Mercedes 15 metres up the road onto the pavement, spun and hit another car.  Anyone walking on the pavement at that point would almost certainly have been killed.

This is not an isolated incident in our area and many residents ask themselves when will the speed limit be implemented?   How many people need to be severely injured or killed for the authorities to take notice to enforce the speed limit?

Birmingham City Council (BCC) has the power to implement speed restrictions through various means (cameras, bumps etc.) , and should have the expertise to decide which method is best implemented in which location.  We would like BCC to prioritise implementing specific speed restrictions on the roads which see the highest speeds.  Local resident associations have made surveys which will provide the detail required.

In addition, BCC should tackle the root cause by changing the culture of driving in our city through campaigns and working with local community leaders.

This has to be co-ordinated with West Midlands Police enforcing the limits throughout our area with regular and frequent mobile speed cameras or other appropriate techniques to identify and prosecute speeding drivers.   This has to be done at the times when drivers are most likely to break the speed limit, which in our experience can be outside the hours of 9am - 5pm.  The accident described above was at approximately 8am on a Saturday.

In the hours after the accident I spoke to 70 people each of whom signed a paper petition requesting speed restrictions are implemented on this road.  Many requested the petition was widened to include other roads which experience similar problems in the area, hence this online petition.  The paper version of 70 signatures is being sent to local councillors, Simon Foster, our PCC and Tahir Ali, our MP.

We can make our area of Birmingham a more safer and more pleasant place to live for all of us.   We just need to make our voice heard.
