Implement Air Conditioning in All Kansas State Prisons

Implement Air Conditioning in All Kansas State Prisons
The Issue
As someone with loved ones serving time in Kansas state prisons, I cannot begin to convey the hardships they endure during the sweltering summer months in steel and brick buildings devoid of air conditioning. For them, and for all our fellow citizens there, we demand a change.
Right now, these buildings go beyond discomfort; they are a health risk. The lack of air conditioning puts an already vulnerable population at an increased risk of heat-related illnesses, such as heat stroke, which can result in severe complications or even death. Prolonged exposure to high temperatures can lead to a host of heat-related illnesses according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Regrettably, this is not a unique situation. Nearly 60% of state prisons in the U.S. are lacking in adequate and efficient cooling systems, according to the Prison Policy Initiative. This is cruel and unusual punishment. This is not a choice; it's a violation of human rights according to the United Nations Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners, known as the Nelson Mandela Rules.
By ensuring Kansas state prisons are equipped with air conditioning, we not only help to minimize health risks but also uphold the dignity of those who are incarcerated – they are, after all, still human beings deserving of humane treatment regardless of their situation.
Let's give the people we care about, and the thousands of others, some relief during the searing summer months. Let us advocate for fundamental human rights and dignity. Please sign this petition to demand the implementation of air conditioning in all Kansas State prisons.
