Implement Age Restrictions for Medical Gender Affirming Care for Minors
The Issue
As an ally of the LGBTQIA+ community, I fully support every individual’s right to choose what is best for their own life. You are valued, respected, and deserving of autonomy. It is this belief that has deeply inspired my advocacy for the rights of this community. However, through my research on how to better support and advocate for LGBTQIA+ rights, I have identified an issue that poses significant risks to adolescents within this community. This issue is one that transcends personal beliefs and calls for united action to safeguard our youth. My hope is that by supporting age restrictions on medical gender-affirming care, we can unite with a common goal of shaping laws that protect our youth.
As someone who is deeply concerned about the potential adverse effects of medical gender-affirming care on cognitive development, I find it crucial for us to engage in this conversation about age restrictions on such treatments pertaining to minors. Research reveals a possibility of repercussions on the cognitive development of adolescents due to these early interventions. Various resources in neuroscience discuss the continuous development of the human brain into the mid-to-late twenties, implying potential vulnerabilities in cognitive and emotional development with early medical interventions (Steinberg, 2010; Arain et al., 2013).
Moreover, alternative solutions such as social based gender-affirming care present a safer treatment plan for gender dysphoric adolescents, focusing on psychological, emotional, and societal aspects without invasive medical interventions. Hence, we call upon regulatory bodies and the medical community to reconsider the current policy that does not impose age restrictions on medical gender affirming care for minors. A consensus about age restrictions that considers the balance between physical health, mental health, and cognitive development should be established. Sign this petition to advocate for the cognitive health of our youths and create a safer, empathetic environment for dealing with gender dysphoria.
