I have personally seen countless children riding their electric scooters unattended, without the safety of a helmet, impulsively crossing red lights and narrowly escaping accidents with oncoming traffic. It is a frightening and frequent sight in our modern cities, endangering not only the child riders, but also drivers and pedestrians who become unwitting participants in these near-collision scenarios.

In 2020, the CDC reported that 45% of electric scooter injuries involved children under the age of 16. This figure, alarming as it is, underscores the necessity for an age limit on the use of electric scooters (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2020).

Electric scooters are quick and efficient, but they are not child's toys. Without well-defined age restrictions in place, we run the risk of exposing our vulnerable youth to needless life-threatening accidents. Therefore, we must urge policymakers to enact and enforce a minimum age requirement for electric scooter use.
