The Issue

My name is Abby Maddux, and I am 25 years old. I have Down syndrome, and like many others with disabilities or elderly individuals, I face significant challenges when it comes to traveling to places in my community around North Richland Hills, Texas. Often, simple activities that others take for granted, like going to a restaurant, a shopping center, or attending community events, become almost impossible due to the lack of suitable transportation options.

For individuals like me, relying on  the goodwill of others is not always feasible. Many of us do not have the financial means to afford regular private transportation services. This lack of affordable door-to-door transportation isolates us from our community, limits our independence, and affects our quality of life.

The need for a reliable, affordable, and accessible transportation service in North Richland Hills is urgent and undeniable. This service would not only benefit people with disabilities and the elderly but also our families and caregivers who strive to offer us the best support possible.

Statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicate that approximately 1 in 4 adults in the U.S. live with a disability. With North Richland Hills' growing population, the demand for such services is only increasing. Our city must lead the way in ensuring that all its residents have equal access to transportation and, by extension, the same opportunities to learn, work, and participate in community life.

We are calling upon the North Richland Hills City Council and relevant local agencies to work together in initiating a subsidized door-to-door transportation service for individuals with disabilities and the elderly and partner with local transport companies to offer discounted rides.

By signing this petition, you are advocating for a vital service that will enhance community connectivity, promote inclusivity, and improve the lives of so many. Let's work together to make North Richland Hills a more accessible and inclusive place for everyone. Please sign this petition to show your support.
