Implement Adaptive Swim and Recreational Programs for Kids with Disabilities in DC

The Issue

My six-year-old daughter, a bright and active girl, uses a walker to move around. Unfortunately, her physical limitations block her from participating in the regular recreational activities offered in our community. Like many other children with similar disabilities, she is left with fewer options for fun, socialization, and physical development.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one in four adults in the U.S has some type of disability. For children, this rate is one in every seven. This significant portion of our population often faces barriers to participation in recreational activities and public programs. Our children deserve the same chances at fun, fitness, and friendship that other children enjoy.

To ensure that every child is able to play, we are urging the DC Department of Parks and Recreation to implement adaptive swim and other recreational programs for kids with disabilities. Such programs have been successfully implemented in many other areas across the country, showing potential for enhanced physical, social, and mental wellness amongst differently-abled participants.

We strongly believe that these adaptive programs will increase inclusivity and give our children a better quality of life. Let's strive for a community where every child, regardless of physical capacity or medical condition, can swim, play, and thrive.
