Implement a Zebra Crossing on Western Harbour Drive for Safer Commutes
The Issue
I am writing this petition with a heavy heart.Recently, an 11-year-old boy lost his life in Cramond and I cannot help but think about what his family and friends must be going through. This has really hit home and is of the main reasons to get this petition started.
Few years ago my aunt tragically lost her life in a hit-and-run accident, leaving behind her 12 and 15-year-old children. The pain of losing someone to road accidents is unbearable and it's time we take action to prevent such tragedies from happening again.
Western Harbour Drive has become increasingly busy over the years due to the growth in population in Newhaven, Edinburgh. During office and school hours, the traffic intensifies making it dangerous for pedestrians especially children who are trying to cross the road.
Across this very road lies a primary school and community gym which are frequently visited by residents of all ages. Without proper pedestrian crossings like zebra crossings, these individuals are at risk every day.
Zebra crossings provide safe passage for pedestrians across roads by giving them right of way when they step onto the crossing. They have been proven effective in reducing pedestrian fatalities by up to 28% according to studies conducted by Transport Research Laboratory (TRL).
The implementation of a zebra crossing on Western Harbour Drive is not just about improving safety; it's about protecting lives – our children's lives, our neighbour's lives, our loved ones' lives.
We urge local authorities and relevant bodies in Newhaven, Edinburgh to take immediate action before another tragedy occurs on our doorstep. Please sign this petition if you believe that everyone deserves safe passage across streets without fear or danger.
