Implement a Wealth Tax on Billionaires and Introduce Inheritance Tax to fight Inequality

The Issue

India is a nation of stark contrasts. While the country has a booming economy and is home to some of the world's richest billionaires, millions of Indians continue to live in poverty and face severe economic inequality. This growing divide between the rich and the poor has serious social and economic implications. If India is to build a more just, equitable, and sustainable future, we must take decisive action to address this wealth disparity.

The Issue:

In India, a small number of billionaires hold a disproportionate amount of the nation’s wealth, while the vast majority struggle to meet their basic needs. The country’s economic growth has primarily benefited the elite, leaving millions of citizens excluded from this prosperity (richest 1% holds more than 40% of the nation's wealth) . Our current tax system continues to favor the rich, who can often avoid paying their fair share of taxes through loopholes and lack of adequate regulations (3% of India's middle-class population contributes more in direct taxes than the entirety of corporate India). Meanwhile, the middle and lower classes are burdened with the bulk of tax obligations.

Furthermore, there is currently no inheritance tax in India. This means that vast fortunes are passed down from one generation to the next without any significant tax burden, allowing dynastic wealth to accumulate and perpetuate inequality across generations. This system creates a cycle of wealth concentration that prevents economic mobility for the majority of the population.

The Solution:

Implement a Progressive Wealth Tax on Billionaires: It is time to introduce a wealth tax on billionaires to ensure that those who have accumulated massive fortunes contribute fairly to the nation’s development. A progressive wealth tax will help redistribute wealth, provide funding for public services such as healthcare, education, and infrastructure, and reduce the concentration of wealth in the hands of a few. ( According to Oxfam International's report titled "Survival of the richest", if India's billionaires are taxed once at 2 per cent on their entire wealth, it would support the requirement of Rs 40,423 crore for the nutrition of malnourished in the country for the next three years.)

Introduce an Inheritance Tax : India does not levy an inheritance tax. As a result, vast fortunes, often amassed over generations, pass on to heirs without being taxed, further entrenching dynastic wealth and perpetuating inequality. We call on the Indian government to implement an inheritance tax that targets individuals inheriting substantial amounts of wealth, property, or assets.

This will prevent the perpetuation of extreme wealth disparities across generations, promote fairness, and ensure that wealth is not concentrated within a few families for decades or even centuries.
