My story starts on the grass fields of Pottstown High School, the place where each day I clock in countless hours as a dedicated field hockey player. As someone who is deeply committed to the world of Pottstown athletics, I’ve directly experienced the detriment of unsafe grass fields. Our passionate teams, coaches, and supporting families deserve better.

A quick comparison between a turf field and a grass field shows why we need this change. With natural grass fields, uneven terrain can result in uneven ball movement and unsafe playing conditions for athletes, increasing the risk of injuries. On the other hand, artificial turf fields provide consistent playing conditions, making it safer for athletes and improving the overall game experience. Numerous studies, such as one by the Journal of Sports Science & Medicine, have shown that artificial turf fields can offer a safer experience for athletes, reducing the potential for injuries by providing a level playing field (Journal of Sports Science & Medicine, 2013).

In addition to improving safety for athletes, implementing a turf field for Pottstown High School would provide an economic benefit. A study by the Sport Journal indicated that artificial turf fields require less maintenance and are more durable than natural grass fields. In the long run, we could save significant upkeep costs in terms of time, effort, and expenses.

As a competent player and a passionate member of Pottstown’s athletic community, I am focusing my efforts on advocating for a turf field.
