Implement a stoplight and crosswalk for campus safety
The Issue
I know from personal experience how frustrating and dangerous it can be to navigate the busy streets between classes on our campus. As a student at The University of Alabama, crossing the street anywhere has become a daily struggle but especially from the Fresh Food Company to the Math and Science Building. Like many of my peers, I have found myself both as a pedestrian trying to rush to class and as a driver attempting to leave campus. Both scenarios present significant challenges that should not be part of our everyday lives.
The current setup exposes students to unnecessary risk as impatient drivers race to their destinations while students hurry across the street, trying to avoid being late. It's not just a campus issue; it's a community-wide safety concern because students are put in harm’s way due to a lack of essential safety infrastructure. Data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration highlights that pedestrian accidents are a leading cause of injury and death for young adults. This is not a statistic we want to be part of.
Our university has recognized the vital role it plays in ensuring the safety of its students but has yet to implement a simple yet powerful solution: a stop light and a clear, marked crosswalk. According to the Federal Highway Administration, adding these improvements reduces the risk of pedestrian accidents by over 85%. Such measures would not only facilitate a safer, more efficient movement between buildings but would also alleviate the stress and hostility currently felt by both drivers and walkers alike.
We propose that our university partners with local transportation authorities to install a stoplight and crosswalk at the busy junction connecting the Fresh Food Company to the Math and Science Building. This small investment could make a significant difference, fostering a safer, more welcoming campus environment.
I urge students, parents, faculty, and local residents to back this initiative. Let us stand together to protect the well-being of everyone navigating our campus. Please sign this petition to demonstrate our collective commitment to safety and to prompt immediate action from those capable of enacting change.
