Implement a Quiet Zone at the Mill Street East Railway Crossing in Acton, ON
The Issue
My fellow residents and I of Acton, Ontario endure daily disruptions from intrusive train horn blasts at the Mill Street East railway crossing. We endure on average 100 blasts a day that go well into the night and early hours of the morning. These blasts reach up to 110 dB. To put this into perspective this is louder than a rock concert. Train horn blasts are proven to be detrimental to our well-being, increasing the risk of heart attacks and disrupting our quality of sleep. Studies have revealed that high noise levels undermine the immune system (WHO) and reduce our bodies' ability to combat illnesses, including cancer.
Financially speaking, these unnerving blasts contribute to a considerable devaluation of local property. I have seen homes on the market for many months, unable to sell; property owners confided they believed it was due to the train blasts.
We propose the establishment of a "quiet zone" at this crossing. In several towns, safe quiet zones have been effectively implemented, ensuring that train conductors only use their horns when absolutely necessary, thus reducing noise pollution dramatically (Federal Railroad Administration). However, in our town, the horns continue to sound regularly, infringing on our rights to peace and serenity in our own homes.
Let's bring our health and peace back, and work to turn the Mill Street East railway crossing into a "quiet zone". Together, we call upon the responsible municipal and railway authorities to consider the implementation of a "quiet zone". No more unnecessary horns; instead, let's embrace the sound of a calm, peaceful neighborhood that this beautiful rural Canadian town used to be. Every signature brings Acton one step closer to improved public health and overall wellbeing. Please, lend your support by putting your name down for peace. Sign the petition today.
