Every year, during festive seasons and celebrations across India, firecrackers are used extensively, causing severe impacts on our environment and health. The production, sale, and bursting of firecrackers contribute significantly to air and noise pollution. This is an urgent call to ban firecrackers across the country to protect our environment and well-being.

The air quality in cities like Mumbai deteriorates drastically every time firecrackers are used. The air becomes heavy with harmful pollutants such as particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10), sulfur dioxide, and nitrogen oxides. For instance, during the Festival of Lights, Diwali, air pollution levels often rise to hazardous levels, making it difficult for people to breathe and triggering respiratory problems. According to a report by SAFAR (System of Air Quality Weather Forecasting and Research), air quality index levels can increase by up to 20 times higher than the safe limits during Diwali. This alarming statistic highlights the urgent need for a complete ban.

Noise pollution is another significant issue. The loud explosions cause distress not only to people, especially vulnerable groups such as the elderly, children, and those with health issues but also to street animals. The constant noise can result in increased anxiety, fear, and disorientation among animals, leading to accidents or even death.

Moreover, firecracker incidents lead to numerous injuries and even mortalities among humans. The National Crime Records Bureau reported that in 2019 alone, there were over 300 firecracker-related casualties and several thousand injuries. Such statistics reflect the brutal reality of firecracker usage.

In Mumbai, firecrackers are not just used during major festivals but throughout the year for all sorts of events, from weddings to political rallies. The unregulated use is not only excessive but detrimental, and it calls for immediate regulatory action.

This petition urges the Indian government to implement a nationwide ban on the production, sale, and use of firecrackers.
