I, along with many of my neighbors, have noticed a distressing trend in our community; our beloved pets often go missing. Due to the volume of posts on Nextdoor, it becomes a challenge to instantly search and locate pertinent information about lost pets. This delay is potentially fatal for our pets who could face threats such as cars, coyotes, or mountain lions. We want a safer community for our four-legged family members.

Nextdoor has a broad reach and has helped to locate lost items, report suspicious activities, and share local news. Adding a designated section for lost and found pets could significantly increase the chances of pets returning home safely, and quickly. Each year, approximately 10 million pets go missing in the U.S. alone, and being able to quickly disseminate information about lost pets can greatly reduce this number (American Humane Society, 2020). Currently, Nextdoor's structure makes it difficult to sort through the flurry of posts to find specific content, which includes posts about lost pets. Implementing a dedicated section for lost and found pets would be a simple solution to a significant problem and could help reunite numerous families with their beloved pets.
