The Issue

All dogs need to get out and get exercise to keep them social and adoptable.  Currently, dogs at both the city and county dog pound in Carmi are confined most of the day, which could lead to behavioral problems and deteriorating mental health. We can change this by implementing a volunteer-driven dog walking program.

Such a program could significantly enhance the well-being of these animals by providing them with regular exercise, fresh air, and human interaction. Studies have shown that regular walks can reduce stress, improve temperaments, and increase adoptability. Moreover, it provides a wonderful opportunity for community members to volunteer, including teenagers, retirees, and anyone who loves dogs or is looking for a sense of community connection.

Many cities across the nation have successfully implemented similar programs. For example, in New York City and Los Angeles, volunteer dog walking programs have been pivotal in transforming the welfare of shelter animals, drastically enhancing their chances of adoption.

By launching this program, we could make Carmi a leading example of compassionate animal care in Illinois. We urge the Carmi city council and Mayor to provide support and authorization for the establishment of a dog walking initiative. Empower the community and, most importantly, improve the lives of our local shelter dogs.

Please sign this petition to show your support for a brighter future for the dogs in Carmi's shelters.
