Implement a Cell Phone Policy in Pequot Lakes Schools

The Issue

The conversation about cell phones in the hands of children and teens has never been more critical. Research has proven that cell phones are significantly hurting kids’ social, physical, and emotional health. While certainly cell phones are impacting students' abilities to focus in the classroom, we can no longer ignore the deeper implications these devices have on our children’s mental health, ability to socialize, and the detrimental rewiring of their developing brains.

Studies show that excessive screen time is linked to increased anxiety and depression among young people (source: American Psychological Association). Furthermore, a study by Common Sense Media found that 50% of teens feel addicted to their mobile devices. These alarming statistics highlight the urgent need for schools to implement policies that significantly limit or ban cell phone usage during school hours.

By implementing a comprehensive cell phone policy in the Pequot Lakes School District (across all grade levels), we can create an environment where students are more engaged in learning and less distracted by their devices. This policy would not only improve academic performance but also foster better social interactions and overall well-being among our students.

We need teachers, parents and community members to sign this petition to urge the Pequot Lakes School District school board and superintendent to prioritize, create and implement a firmly limited-use cell phone policy before the 2024-2025 school year commences.
