Implement a cap on care fees in residential homes
The Issue
My mam is nearly 96 years old and spent a large portion of her life dedicated to her career. As Head Chef in three local hospitals, she often worked tirelessly seven days a week to ensure her mortgage and our family's well-being were taken care of. Her dedication was unwavering, her work ethic impeccable.
In 2020, my mam suffered a massive heart attack and went into organ failure. Remarkably, she recovered from this life-threatening ordeal, but the battle was not yet over. To support her ongoing health needs, she had to be moved into residential care. This was an inevitable decision but has come with an exorbitant financial burden.
To date, she has paid nearly £204,000 for her care, using her hard-earned savings and the equity from her home. This is an obscene amount of money that burdens not only our family but countless others across the nation facing similar circumstances. How many of our elderly citizens, after dedicating their lives to work and family, find themselves financially drained, struggling to afford the care they require in their twilight years?
We need a law that limits the maximum amount paid in care homes. Many countries have implemented such caps to protect their elderly citizens from financial exploitation and ensure they receive the care they need without the fear of financial ruin. It's time for our country to follow suit.
By creating this cap, we ensure that our elderly population can live their remaining years in dignity and peace. Such a law would help numerous families, preventing the complete depletion of savings meant for retirement or legacies for grandchildren.
We ask our lawmakers and leaders to take urgent action, hear our voices, and implement this necessary change. It's time for our elderly to be treated with the respect they deserve, without the fear of financial devastation.
Please sign this petition to call for a law capping care fees in residential homes, so that families, like mine, aren't burdened with insurmountable costs that darken what should be serene and dignified years of life. Together, we can make a difference and ensure fair care for all of our elderly loved ones.
