The Issue

I, like many other individuals across the UK, dedicate my spare time to litter picking. I reside in an area that is a particularly severe hotspot for roadside litter. It is disheartening to constantly see streets, bushes, and roadsides turning into the nation's dirty advertising boards. The most frequently picked items during my litter-picking expeditions are from fast food chains, energy drinks, and sweet wrappers. Despite ongoing efforts to educate the public, it seems apparent that education alone does not suffice. Pride in our beautiful landscapes and environments is at an all-time low.

We propose a practical and impactful solution: implementing a 1p levy on the UK's top littered brands. This approach is designed to not only encourage corporate responsibility among the major contributors to roadside litter but also generate vital funds required for environmental cleanup projects across our country. The proceeds from this levy must be exclusively ring-fenced for environmental cleanup initiatives, ensuring that our natural surroundings are preserved and protected for future generations.

This is a call to action. A call for responsibility from corporations whose packaging materials contribute significantly to our litter problem, and a call for public support to hold these entities accountable for their environmental footprint.

Statistics indicate that the UK produces over 2.2 million pieces of litter each day, and this figure is staggeringly high for a nation that prides itself on its heritage and natural beauty. By imposing this levy, we can turn this ongoing environmental concern into an opportunity for change, effectively reducing littering and improving the quality of our surroundings.

Let us unite in this endeavour to keep our streets clean, our parks pristine, and our communities flourishing. We must urge our policymakers to implement this levy as an essential step toward a cleaner, more sustainable future. Please add your voice by signing this petition to bring about the change our environment desperately needs.
