The Issue

I am a mother who has seen firsthand the devastation drugs like fentanyl can cause when they inadvertently end up in the hands of our most vulnerable – our children. Recently, a tragic incident in my community led to the hospitalization of a young child after accidentally ingesting fentanyl, a potent synthetic opioid. Unfortunately, this is not an isolated event. Across the United States, the number of young children exposed to drugs is on the rise, resulting in preventable injuries and deaths.

In fact, according to the American Association of Poison Control Centers, over the past few years, there has been a significant increase in cases of pediatric exposures to opioids and other drugs. The National Institute on Drug Abuse reports that even small dosages of fentanyl can be fatal, especially to children whose bodies cannot handle such powerful substances. This alarming trend necessitates immediate and stringent action.

That is why I am calling for a minimum mandatory sentence of 10 years for individuals responsible for allowing drugs to fall into the hands of children. Such a law would not only serve as a deterrent but also emphasize the gravity of this issue, ensuring that accountability is upheld. By implementing stricter legal consequences, we can protect our children, uphold their right to safety, and secure justice for their unnecessary suffering.

Concrete steps must follow this call to action. We urge lawmakers to introduce legislation for harsher penalties while also fostering community programs aimed at educating parents and guardians about the risks and signs of drug presence in their environments. Resources should be allocated to strengthen law enforcement's ability to track and prosecute those whose negligence leads to these tragedies.

Every child deserves a safe environment in which to grow and thrive, free from the dangers posed by drugs. Let us take a stand to protect our communities and advocate for those who cannot advocate for themselves. Join me in urging legislators to make the essential changes needed to secure our children's futures.
