Implement 4-Day School Weeks, With Friday Off, in Our District
The Issue
My life as a student is not an easy one. Constant pressure, endless assignments, and lack of personal time make school an unbearable existence for me. Spending such long durations in school also affects the time I can spend on hobbies like playing Fortnite, or Doing Making Music as well as time with my family. It has come to my attention that numerous schools nationwide have adopted a 4 day school week system – wrapping up on Thursday and taking an off on Friday.
Why can't our school district Selma Unified School District In Selma Calfiornia Central Valley follow suit? Research supports this change, too. A recent study in Colorado found that a 4-day school week led to increased math scores and no significant change in reading scores among students. It also revealed that additional time off school eased the level of mental health issues among students (SOURCE: D. Mark Anderson and Mary Beth Walker, "Does Shortening the School Week Impact Student Performance? Evidence from the Four-Day School Week," Education Finance and Policy).
This shift also aligns with international norms. Many countries in Europe follow a similar pattern, taking off one day during their work week to maintain a proper work-life balance.

The School district needs to gives us, the students, a chance to have a balanced life too. Now is the time to advocate for a 4-day school week system. Let's provide our children with an environment that fosters their growth, maintains their mental health, and respects their need for personal time.
