We, the undersigned citizens of the United States, call upon the U.S. House of Representatives to initiate an impeachment inquiry into Justice Clarence Thomas of the U.S. Supreme Court for serious and credible ethical, legal and constitutional concerns.

Why this action is needed

1. Breach of ethical and legal duties:

For more than two decades Justice Thomas reportedly accepted luxury travel, private-jet flights, yacht trips, resort stays and other hospitality from billionaire conservative donor Harlan Crow and others—without proper disclosure. 

The gifts at issue include dozens of destination vacations, private-jet flights, helicopter rides, resort lodging and sporting-event VIP tickets—all subject to the disclosure rules under the Ethics in Government Act of 1978, which requires federal judges/justices to report gifts above a certain value. 

Justice Thomas failed to disclose many of these gifts on his financial-disclosure filings, raising the appearance of favoritism, undue influence and compromised impartiality. 

Additional allegations: an aide to Justice Thomas accepted payments from lawyers who had cases before the Court. 

A documented property transaction: Justice Thomas and his family sold real-estate interests to Harlan Crow, renovation benefits followed, and Thomas omitted disclosure of Crow’s identity on a required section of his form. 

 

2. Threat to judicial integrity and public trust

A Supreme Court Justice must uphold the Constitution, follow federal law, and remain impartial and free of influence or the perception thereof.

When a justice receives recurring, high-value benefits from individuals who have interests or potential interests in the Court’s outcomes, even if no explicit quid-pro-quo is proven, the appearance of corrupted or compromised judgment is grave. 

Justice Thomas’s repeated failure to sever or disclose such benefits—and his refusal to recuse himself in certain cases where his benefactors had interests—creates the risk of partisan or donor-driven decision-making, undermining the rule of law.

 

3. Loyalty to a political agenda rather than the Constitution

Documents show Justice Thomas’s wife, Virginia ‘Ginni’ Thomas, is a conservative activist deeply engaged with Republican politics. At least one report indicates payments to her by conservative organizations, funneled in ways that attempted to obscure her identity. 

The combination of financial ties, unreported gifts and activist spouse involvement raises the question: is Justice Thomas acting as a neutral arbiter of the law, or as a partisan instrument of a political-donor network?

 

What we demand

We demand that the U.S. House immediately open a formal impeachment inquiry into Justice Clarence Thomas.

We demand full transparency: access to the full schedule of gifts, travel, loans, real-estate transactions, and school-tuition sponsorships involving Justice Thomas, his spouse, and extended family.

We demand reinforced recusal standards and enforceable ethics rules for Supreme Court Justices, including mandatory disclosure of all gifts, loans, travel and real-estate dealings.

We demand that any justice found to have accepted impermissible gifts, or participated in cases where donor-benefactors had interests, be removed from office, and that subsequent cases in which they participated be reviewed for potential reversal or vacatur.

The stakes

Our democracy depends on an independent and impartial judiciary. The highest court in the land must not only be fair, it must appear fair. When Justices accept multi-hundred-thousand-dollar vacations, private-jet rides and tuition sponsorships from billionaire partisans, the public trust is eroded, the separation of powers is jeopardized, and the Constitution suffers.

This is not merely about politics. It is about preserving the rule of law, equal justice and accountability at the highest level.

Additional Historical & Factual Background

A 2023 investigation by ProPublica found that Thomas accepted at least 38 destination vacations, 26 private-jet flights, 8 helicopter rides, stays at luxury resorts, and VIP passes—all without appropriate disclosure. 

In 2000 Justice Thomas reportedly threatened to resign unless the salary of Supreme Court Justices was raised. Around that time he was reportedly hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt. Shortly afterwards, billionaire donors began paying for travel and benefits for him and his wife. 

In 2014 Harlan Crow bought three properties from Thomas, his mother and family. After the sale, substantial renovations were undertaken on the home. On Thomas’s disclosure form the buyer’s name (Crow) was omitted in the space provided.

 Allegedly, Justice Thomas' aide (Rajan Vasisht) accepted Venmo payments from lawyers who had cases before the Court. 

Thomas and his wife appear to have close ties to conservative political networks and donor organizations, which feed into broader concerns of loyalty to political ends rather than constitutional fidelity.
