Immediately rebuild Manitoba Provincial Highway 234 to ensure that the highway is safe
The Issue
Petition to The Manitoba Provincial Government (Manitoba Transportation and Infrastructure) to immediately allocate funding and direction to rebuild Provincial Highway 234 to ensure that the highway is safe, dependable, and well maintained.
Provincial Highway 234 is a 92-kilometre highway that provides the only access to: Matheson Island, Pine Dock, Island View Cottage Subdivision, Leaside Cottage Subdivision, Little Deer Cottage Subdivision, Mill Creek Cottage Subdivision, Pebblestone Cottage Subdivision, Beaver Creek Provincial Park, Frog Bay Fish Processing Plant, Beaver Creek Bible Camp, Sungro Horticultural, Sunterra Horticultural Inc. Berger Peat Moss. Provincial Highway 234 is also travelled extensively by Fresh Water Fish Marketing, Canada Post, Interlake -Eastern Regional Health Authority, Commercial Fishers, Angling Fishers, Private Contractors, and numerous Trucking Companies.
Provincial Highway 234 was built many years ago with substandard fill/base and over the years has received minimal funding for upgrading of the highway and substandard material for the general maintenance of the highway.
Over the past 20 years, The Provincial Government(s) have opened 4 Cottage Subdivisions with over 200 cottage lots being utilized seasonally and year-round. Over the past 20 years the Provincial Government(s) have issued licences for increased Peat Moss Mining in the area. The Provincial government(s) has not provided updated and required infrastructure for Highway 234 to meet the increased traffic. Provincial Highway 234 has become a very dangerous, unsafe, deteriorating highway. In the unfortunate case of an accident, Emergency Vehicles would spend extensive time navigating the highway to provide services.
We call upon Manitoba Transportation and Infrastructure to immediately allocate funding and direction to ensure the entire distance of Provincial Highway 234 is updated, maintained and provides safe travelling for all involved.
