Immediate pause in Brunswick County development approvals

Immediate pause in Brunswick County development approvals
The Issue
🚨 Petition to Protect Brunswick County
Immediate Moratorium on Reckless Development, Permits, and Clear-Cutting
We, the people of Brunswick County, demand an immediate halt to reckless development — not just new subdivisions, but also the flood of building permits in already-approved mega-developments and the clear-cutting that wipes our land bare.
Developers have been handed thousands of lots through years of rubber-stamped approvals. If the county allows unlimited permits and wholesale clear-cutting, the bulldozers keep rolling, the flooding keeps rising, and our communities pay the price.
This is not growth. It’s exploitation.
And if we don’t act now, our children will inherit gridlock, sewage, and a county stripped of its soul.
❗ Why This Moratorium Is Urgent
Infrastructure is collapsing.
In 2024 alone, 15 subdivisions were approved — more than 2,000 homes. Highway 17 traffic surged 25%. Sewer spills are increasing. Schools and roads are overwhelmed. Our systems are breaking.
Our land and water are being erased.
Developers are clear-cutting entire forests, draining wetlands, and building in floodplains. Every tree cut and every acre paved makes flooding worse. Farmland and habitat are vanishing forever.
The rules are rigged.
The Unified Development Ordinance (UDO) was written by and for developers. The sections protecting residents and the environment were left unfinished, while thresholds for developers have been loosened again and again.
The people are ignored.
Over 600 residents have already demanded a moratorium. Yet subdivisions and permits are still rubber-stamped at nearly every meeting.
📣 What We Demand
1. Immediate minimum 1-year moratorium on:
All new residential subdivisions.
All building permits in subdivisions over 50 lots until infrastructure is proven capable
2. End clear-cutting. Require phased development, real buffers, tree preservation, and mandatory replanting.
3. Amend the UDO immediately to protect residents:
Stop approvals in floodplains
Require true 1-acre lot minimums
Enforce farm and neighborhood buffers
Ban density loopholes like cluster septic systems
4. Developer-funded infrastructure. Roads, sewer, and schools must be paid for by those who profit, not taxpayers.
5. Floodplain and wetland protections. Ban subdivisions and permits where water belongs.
6. True transparency. At least 10 days public notice, mandatory livestreams, and binding community input.
7. Resident oversight board. Longtime citizens must have a permanent seat at the table to hold government accountable.
🌱 The People’s Growth Plan
We don’t need “smart growth” spin. We need real protections that safeguard our homes, health, and heritage:
PFAS & water testing before any approvals or permits
Citizen-led stormwater enforcement
No clear-cutting without strong mitigation
Legacy zoning to protect longtime families
Developer bonding to cover infrastructure failures
Clawbacks if projects aren’t built within 2–3 years
Conflict-of-interest enforcement for officials
No “bulk approvals” hidden in technical reviews
This is how we safeguard Brunswick County for the next 100 years.
💚 For Our Kids, Our Dogs, Our Future
This fight isn’t just about numbers, ordinances, or traffic studies. It’s about the lives we live every day.
Our kids deserve an acre to play on, to chase fireflies, climb trees, and grow up with room to breathe. Not postage-stamp lots crammed together in subdivisions with no yards, no shade, and no safe space to explore.
Our dogs deserve trees to lay under, cool grass to roll in, and creeks that aren’t polluted with runoff and sewage. Not treeless moonscapes where the ground bakes under concrete.
Our families deserve clean water, safe roads, and a county with character — not endless sprawl, sewage spills, and traffic jams.
Brunswick County was built on open land, family farms, and natural beauty. If we lose that, we lose who we are.
This petition is not just about stopping reckless development — it’s about protecting the soul of Brunswick County for the next 100 years.
