The Issue
To Whom It May Concern,
I am reaching out as a concerned caregiver and resident of the Havenwood Daisy Community in Cochran. Recently, I have become increasingly alarmed by the noticeable presence of chlorine and potentially other harmful chemicals in our water supply.
It is important to note that residents of Cochran have been raising concerns about the water quality for years, yet no effective actions have been taken to resolve these issues. The ongoing lack of resolution is deeply troubling, particularly for vulnerable populations such as those in Havenwood Daisy Community — a 55+ community housing elderly residents who may be more susceptible to the adverse health effects of chemical exposure.
Chlorine, while necessary for disinfection, can become hazardous when levels are excessive, contributing to respiratory distress, skin irritation, and potential long-term health complications. Emerging research also suggests that chemical byproducts formed from chlorine and other disinfectants may present further risks.
Given the serious health implications and the ongoing complaints from Cochran residents, I am urging the City to take immediate action to address these concerns through the following steps:
1. Comprehensive City-Wide Water Testing:
Conduct an urgent analysis of Cochran’s entire water supply to assess chlorine levels, chloramine, and other contaminants that may be impacting public health.
2. Targeted Testing in Havenwood Daisy Community:
Prioritize testing in Havenwood Daisy Community, where a predominantly elderly population is at heightened risk of adverse health effects from chemical exposure.
3. Immediate Reporting and Transparency:
Provide a detailed, accessible report of the findings, including contaminant levels, potential health risks, and any necessary advisories for residents.
4. Swift Implementation of Solutions:
Implement effective remediation measures, such as filtration systems or alternative disinfection methods that safeguard public health while maintaining water quality.
Furthermore , studies show prolonged exposure to FLUORIDE can cause harmful effects :
1. Neurodevelopmental Impact:
• A study published in Environmental Health Perspectives (2017) found that higher prenatal fluoride exposure was associated with lower IQ scores in children aged 4 and 6–12 years.
• The National Toxicology Program (NTP) conducted a systematic review in 2020, concluding that higher fluoride exposure is associated with cognitive deficits in children.
2. Bone and Skeletal Issues:
• Long-term exposure to high levels of fluoride can lead to skeletal fluorosis, a condition that causes joint stiffness, pain, and damage to bones.
• A 2006 National Research Council (NRC) report identified skeletal fluorosis as a risk at prolonged exposure levels of 4 mg/L or higher.
3. Thyroid Dysfunction:
• Fluoride can accumulate in the thyroid gland and interfere with hormone production.
• A study published in the Journal of Epidemiology & Community Health (2015) found that areas with higher fluoride concentrations in drinking water had higher rates of hypothyroidism.
4. Kidney Function:
• Fluoride is primarily excreted through the kidneys. People with compromised kidney function are at greater risk of fluoride toxicity.
5. Pineal Gland Calcification:
• Research by Dr. Jennifer Luke (1997) suggested that fluoride can accumulate in the pineal gland, potentially affecting melatonin production and sleep regulation
Clean, safe water is a basic human right and a critical component of public health. The urgency of this request cannot be overstated. Residents of Cochran and Havenwood Daisy Community deserve swift, decisive action to address these pressing water quality concerns after years of unresolved complaints.
Thank you for your immediate attention to this matter. Please contact me directly to discuss this further or to provide updates on planned actions.
