IMMEDIATE ACTION NEEDED: Stop Cross-Border Sewage Pollution in Imperial Beach, CA

IMMEDIATE ACTION NEEDED: Stop Cross-Border Sewage Pollution in Imperial Beach, CA
The Issue
Residents of South Bay of San Diego have endured the effects of cross-border sewage pollution coming from the Tijuana River for decades. Recently it has gone from bad to worse as our ocean environment and the direct health impacts caused by flowing Mexican sewage are effecting everyone in our community. The threat is real and enormous in its implications. Daily water testing results show that untreated sewage containing toxic elements has rendered our ocean waters unfit for human use or aquatic life (source: U.S. Environmental Protection Agency).
Our Tijuana River, normally dry 11 months of the year, is now a permanent flowing sewage channel. This is a clear demonstration of environmental disregard by our county and state leaders.
The plan which has put us in this disastrous condition is San Diego County Plan SB507 plan sponsored by Ben Hueso and signed into law by Gavin Newsom. SB507 has done little to provide a sustainable solution, but rather has brought 480% MORE MEXICAN SEWAGE into the US, leading to our beaches being closed for over 900 days, while our streets and neighborhoods are infiltrated with sewage stink every evening.
The prior plan called the 2020 Arcadis plan was on tract to bring our beach closure days to less than 30 days per year. This plan was intentionally phased and replaced by the SB507 plan in less than one year. The San Francisco EPA have stated the SB507 aka The USMCA Comprehensive plan is a more holistic approach to the problem. Nothing could be farther from the truth. The SB507 plan installs permanent ponds of sewage in the Tijuana River Valley and dumps up to 652% more Mexican sewage off Imperial Beach. Here are the Pro's & Con's side by side comparison of the plans:
Therefore, we call for an immediate and comprehensive reassessment of the current cross-border sewage plan. This reassessment should aim at restoring the Tijuana River back to its natural state, stopping the flow of sewage into the United States, and controlling or shutting down the SB507.
We demand comprehensive solutions that solve these issues for good!!
We urge you to take action now!
