Immediate Action: Moratorium on McMansions; Enforce Overnight Parking Ordinances
The Issue
We, the residents of Elmont as represented by The Parkhurst Civic Association, and the other six civic associations, are writing to bring to your attention significant issues that are adversely affecting the quality of life in our neighborhoods & communities. These concerns are not isolated to Elmont, they also negatively impact significant portions of the Town of Hempstead.
1. Immediate Moratorium on McMansion: There is a disturbing trend of converting single floor, single-family homes to oversized, multi story, multi family dwellings that often serve as taxi stands. This not only violates current zoning regulations but also leads to significant decreases in property values. The conversion of homes into taxi stands disrupts the residential character of our neighborhood and creates an environment that is not conducive to a peaceful and safe living experience. If this trend continues, what’s next? Conversion of residential properties to roadside mechanic shops? Popup candy stores? Where will it end TOH?
2. Overnight Parking of ALL Commercial Vehicles: The recent influx of New York City Yellow cabs, TLC, Uber, and other ride-share vehicles has led to an alarming increase in illegal overnight parking. This has resulted in congested streets, increased noise pollution, and a general deterioration of the neighborhood environment. The presence of these vehicles has also led to safety concerns, particularly for pedestrians and residents who are forced to navigate through these areas.
We understand that the current representation in the Town of Hempstead may not fully reflect the will, needs and concerns of the majority of our community. However, this jerrymandered fact is not an excuse for the current members of The Town Board to ignore the pressing issues faced by Elmont and the Town of Hempstead in general.
We urge you to take immediate action to address these issues enumerated here and work towards finding viable solutions that will improve the quality of life for all residents in Elmont and the Town of Hempstead. We believe that through open communication, collaboration, and a commitment to the well-being of our communities, we can overcome these challenges and create a better now for all.
