Immediate Action for Clean Air in Navi Mumbai

Immediate Action for Clean Air in Navi Mumbai
The Issue
Navi Mumbai is experiencing sustained periods of poor air quality, with AQI levels frequently crossing “unhealthy” and “hazardous” ranges. This crisis affects everyone who breathes, but especially children, senior citizens, pregnant women, asthma patients, outdoor workers and daily commuters who have no choice but to inhale toxic air for hours at a stretch. Schools are reporting rising respiratory issues among students, construction workers are exposed to dangerous particulate matter throughout the day and hospitals are witnessing an increase in cases of breathlessness, headache, irritation and chronic coughing. Clean air has become a privilege in places where it should be the bare minimum.
If urgent measures are not taken, our city will face long-term public health damage ranging from reduced lung function in children to a spike in respiratory and cardiac disease across the general population. Pollution is not just an environmental issue, it is a direct threat to economic productivity, community well-being and basic human dignity. A city that cannot breathe cannot progress. However, if we act now with enforceable policies, transparent monitoring and citizen-driven accountability, we can prevent irreversible harm, reduce healthcare burdens, protect future generations and build a city where development does not come at the cost of health.
Air pollution has become a public health emergency that demands immediate, systemic action. Navi Mumbai is at a critical moment of rapid construction, industrial expansion and increasing vehicular emissions. If these activities are not regulated now, we risk locking ourselves into decades of toxic air. For that reason, we are not merely raising concern, we are submitting a clear, actionable proposal outlining urgent measures such as construction dust regulation, zero tolerance for waste burning, strict industrial emissions audits and expansion of urban green cover. We demand that these measures be implemented without delay. The residents of Navi Mumbai deserve clean air and we need action now.
To strengthen this demand and raise public awareness, we are also organising a silent Human Chain for Clean Air on 20th December at Mini Seashore, Sector 10-A, Vashi, from 7 AM to 9 PM. This peaceful gathering symbolises the voice of citizens demanding clean air and stands as a reminder that breathing should never be a privilege.
