In today’s society, the United States has no restrictions on single-use plastics, but some states have taken the environmental crisis and turned it into legislation by banning plastics such as grocery bags in places like California. With the ball starting to roll in the right direction, it seems time that Illinois take a look at the dangers posed by single-use plastics on not just the nation’s, but the world’s climate.

According to National Geographic, 90% of the nation’s plastics end up in landfills with a portion of those plastics being polystyrene, a type of plastic that often doesn’t have the means to be recycled. In cities like Austin, a ban on plastic bags has pushed citizens to use reusable bags leading to a 75% reduction in the number of plastic bags collected as litter.

Single-use plastics aren’t limited to plastic bags however, and the term includes things such as plastic cutlery, coffee cups, and much more. According to World Wildlife Fund, by 2050, the total amount of plastics in our oceans will outweigh all fish. No single person can solve this environmental crisis alone, and we must push our state and national legislatures to pass legislation to save the climate of our country and planet.
