Iligan Water Crisis: Frequent Interruptions Must Stop!
The Issue
Before 2020, water in Iligan City flowed reliably 24/7. Today, frequent interruptions have become a heavy burden for thousands of families — and 2026 has been especially severe.
My family and many others have had to fetch water just to meet basic needs, carefully ration every drop, and struggle with simple tasks like bathing, cooking, and washing clothes. Water is not a luxury. It is essential for health, sanitation, dignity, and daily life.
Iligan is proudly called the City of Waterfalls. Yet too many homes face dry taps, weak pressure, and unexpected outages.
This is not just anecdotal. A February 2024 Commission on Audit report found that the Iligan City Waterworks System (ICWS) was losing approximately 64% of its water production daily through leaks and other losses — roughly 97 million liters wasted out of 150.75 million liters produced, with only about 53.66 million liters reaching billed consumers. Old, leaking underground pipes were identified as a major cause. Resident surveys in the same audit showed the majority experiencing frequent disruptions.
The problems have continued. In April 2026, an emergency pipe burst forced a sudden shutdown affecting an estimated 15,000–20,000 households across 15 urban barangays, with no advance notice possible and water rationing required. Throughout 2026, repeated failures — especially on the System 3 transmission pipeline in Barangay Suarez — have triggered more emergency shutdowns, repairs, and rationing. Official ICWS advisories and news reports document these recurring incidents. Aging pipes that cannot handle pressure, limited resources for systematic rehabilitation, and the resulting uncertainty are taking a real toll on ordinary families, students, workers, the elderly, and people with limited means.
Temporary repairs and water deliveries help in the moment, but they are not a lasting solution. Residents need a dependable system: transparent reporting on water losses and repair progress, timely advisories, stronger leak detection and maintenance, a clear timeline for pipeline rehabilitation and pressure management, and meaningful accountability from the Iligan City Government, ICWS, and relevant agencies.
I started this petition so my family, fellow Iliganons, and future generations do not have to keep living with this struggle. Reliable water access is a basic right, not an occasional privilege.

We call on the City Government of Iligan, the Iligan City Waterworks System, and national partners to prioritize and accelerate concrete, transparent action — not just another round of emergency fixes.
Help make reliable, 24/7 water service a reality for Iligan City.
