Pick ACTUALLY Good "Best Lyrics" for iHeart Radio Music Awards '19
The Issue
Music awards shows make really stupid nominations for "best song" or whatever, but iHeart Radio Music Awards has done the impossible by making other awards shows look like geniuses. For the "Best Lyrics" category of their 2019 awards show, iHeart Radio nominated the following:
- "thank u, next" by Ariana Grande
- "In My Blood" by Shawn Mendes
- "Girls Like You" by Maroon 5 ft. Cardi B
- "Without Me" by Halsey
- "God's Plan" by Drake
- "Consequences" by Camila Cabello
All of these artists are capable of incredible things and (some) have written excellent lyrics before, but calling these the "best lyrics" of 2019 suggests either severe lack of mental capacity or an agenda inspired by greed and insider agreements.
Seriously...
In a year where huge acts like Florence + the Machine discussed the "Hunger" inside all of us, Twenty One Pilots ruminated on celebrity suicide's effects on kids ("Neon Gravestones"), and Eminem lyrically DESTROYED mumble rap (or even MGK for that matter), iHeart Radio wants to make a mockery of the concept of "good lyrics" and promote these songs (most of which are probably songs written by committee anyway)?
"Girls Like You" is held together by the power of cliches and Cardi B vagina references. "God's Plan" can barely stick to a coherent topic. "thank u, next" is a Cosmo magazine cover disguised as verses and chorus. The other three are okay, but hardly qualify as the "Best Lyrics" of 2018.
iHeart Radio, you're mocking us. Make your picks based on something other than what'll get you the most clicks and show some class. Don't treat us like idiots.
