Identify and Charge the Attackers of a Trans Woman in Miami-Dade
The Issue
Felyz Rodriguez and her partner, Devin Lopez, were on their way to work one Sunday evening in northwest Miami-Dade when a car full of women made a U-turn and came back for them. According to LGBTQ Nation and NBC Miami, one of the women pepper-sprayed Lopez. Another grabbed Rodriguez, a transgender woman, by the hair and yanked her hard. Then the driver threw the car into reverse, and the open door knocked Rodriguez to the ground.
A bystander caught part of the assault on video. The attackers drove off before officers showed up. Police have opened an investigation, and the couple plans to press charges.
"It was all unprovoked; we were just walking," Rodriguez told NBC Miami.
Lopez said on social media that this is the third time the two of them have been assaulted. The couple is Hispanic, and they have openly asked whether they were singled out because Rodriguez is trans, because of their ethnicity, or both. They deserve an answer.
The Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office should use the video and witness accounts to identify everyone in that car and make arrests without delay. The Miami-Dade State Attorney's Office should file charges that match how serious this attack was and look closely at whether bias played a role.
Nobody should have to wonder if a walk to work could end with pepper spray and a car door. People of every background deserve to get where they're going safely, and victims deserve a real investigation no matter who they are.
Sign the petition to demand that the people behind this attack are found and held accountable before anyone else gets hurt.
