Culture and race is not a caricature, and does not belong as a mascot. Last year, on July 26th 2019, The Fort Hall Business Council, the governing body for the Shoshone Bannock Tribes, submitted a position paper to the Idaho Board of Education to officially oppose the use of racial misappropriation to terms relating to Native Americans, including “Indians,” “Savages,” and “Redskins” as a part of any school mascots in Idaho. There were eight Idaho high schools that the Shoshone-Bannock tribe appealed to, only two of which who actually changed their mascots since this appeal. With this petition, I am appealing to my local high school, Pocatello High School (my alma mater), to change their mascot of the Indians, effective immediately. School is a place where all students should feel welcome to get their education, free of racial stereotyping and prejudice. I truly hope the Idaho Board of Education, Pocatello School District 25, and the Pocatello community can honor and acknowledge the differences between people and culture by no longer perpetuating racial stereotypes and allowing cultures to be caricatured.
